Children’s Dentistry

It’s a sight we see and a story we hear all too often. A parent brings a young child in to the dentist, thinking everything is fine with the little one’s teeth. Then the dentist has to deliver the bad news: The kid’s teeth are riddled with cavities and will need multiple fillings or (in some extreme cases) root canals.

How does this happen? Believe it or not, children start to face cavity risks not long after their first teeth erupt. Pediatric dentists recommend that you bring in an infant anywhere from a month to six months after that initial tooth breaks through. And we at Westend Dental suggest exactly the same thing.

Though we initially founded our practice on adult patients, we’ve since branched out to offer child-friendly orthodontics and dental care. Read on to learn more about how to prepare your child for an initial dental visit and the factors that set our pediatric practice apart.

What to Expect on Your Child’s First Visit

Here’s the good news about your child’s first visit: It will actually involve very little actual oral treatment. Why? The initial steps with infant/baby care are as much about building rapport and increasing your child’s comfort level around dental professionals. Depending on your child, we may ask you to hold him or her during the appointment. We also may request that you stay in the waiting room so that we can begin to build a relationship through one-on-one interaction.

Make no mistake, this initial visit is vitally important even though it doesn’t involve much medical treatment. Getting your little one acclimated to the idea of a regular pediatric cleaning has lifelong benefits. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, tooth decay is five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. In fact, tooth decay is the most common and the most preventable disease in children. Though we offer emergency care for pediatric clients, we’d much rather avoid them through regular cleanings — and that starts with your very first visit.
