Unfortunately, tooth decay is probably the number one preventable disease afflicting Americans, so if you’ve never suffered through a cavity, you have been very lucky. The other 78% of us have to suffer through at least one cavity before we’re 17. We all live with the simple fact that as we age and our teeth our subjected to wear and tear, they start to decay. A filling may be required to repair that damage and restore the tooth in question to its original form. Although silver amalgam was primarily utilized for dental fillings in the past, here at Westend Dental our team uses composite resin for fillings. Compared to the most popular alternative (silver amalgam fillings), composite resin fillings are not only more durable and aesthetically pleasing, they can more easily be matched to your tooth color.
What to Expect During the Dental Filling Procedure
When you arrive in our office to have your cavity filled, our team will do our best to make you comfortable by offering you our many patient amenities and giving anesthetic before the procedure begins. During the filling procedure, your dentist will remove any decayed material in and/or on the tooth followed by then filling in the gap left by the removed structure with tooth-matching composite resin material.
Once your cavity has been filled your appointment is complete, with any numbness owing to anesthetic will wear off in approximately 2-4 hours. Food and drink may be consumed immediately after the procedure but should only be with caution due to numbness in the mouth.
